Following a rain-soaked week, the weather gods were finally smiling on Sunderland’s High Street West as a fun-filled ‘Street Party’ was staged. Warm sunshine was the order of the day as the street was host to fairground rides, jugglers, musical acts, face-painters and food-tasting opportunities.
The party follows extensive work in the city shopping area that has seen new paving, planting, lighting and street furniture installed. Like many other towns, the street has suffered in recent years with a number of businesses closing, although it is hoped that new businesses will see opportunities from moving into High Street West. At the west end a new hotel is to be built overlooking Keel Square, there’s the newly developing ‘Cultural Quarter’ and across St Mary’s Way, work is already well underway on developing the Vaux site with the future increased footfall that that will bring.
